Puppets help seniors discover inner world

A program that helps people create mask-body puppets helps seniors uncover their inner world while learning about mental health.  View from the Inside: Courage Journey is a workshop offered by WP Puppet Theatre to various groups around Calgary to help promote mental health and wellness. Those groups have included seniors-focused ones such as The Alzheimer’s Society – Club 36 and the Carya-Active Chinese Seniors Cultural Group.

Promoting Resilience through Puppetry: The Typhoon Haiyan Experience.

After Typhoon Haiyan devastated parts of the Philippines in 2013, a woman decided to use her puppetry skills to help people heal in her country. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete taught day care workers how to use puppets to work with kids who were traumatized during the disaster. “The workshop was about the inner and outer expression – the things we want to hide on the inside. It asks the who, the why, the what. I discovered I am seeking all the time to discover the joy of life.”

Garrison Green resident Wendy Martin was part of a workshop developed by WP Puppet Theatre called View From the Inside: Courage Journey as part of the larger city-wide arts festival, This is My City. The project asked participants – including those at United Active Living’s Garrison Green community – to create mask-body puppets that express who they are.  > read more

Calgary World Puppetry Day celebration allows young and old to express themselves

metro1Monday’s World Puppetry Day celebration allowed Calgarian Nadia Asad to realize a lifelong dream.

“My friend is making a daughter,” smiled Sonia Bakhtiar, who watched the kids as her friend worked. “She has three boys, so now she’s putting girl clothes on a puppet.”

Meanwhile their kids were expressing themselves through puppet ninjas, and a man made entirely of stickers.

The World Puppetry Day celebration, held by WP Puppet Theatre, encouraged people to create a puppet and add it to one of the chains of puppets set up through the space, all holding hands.
