Frequently asked questions.
1. What is “applied puppetry,” and how does WP Puppet Theatre use it?
Applied puppetry is the intentional use of puppets beyond entertainment — as tools for education, therapy, and social change. At WP Puppet Theatre, we use puppetry in schools, social service settings, and community programs to spark dialogue, support expression, and build empathy around complex issues.
2. Do I need to be an artist to take part in WP Puppet Theatre programs?
Not at all! Our programs are designed for everyone — from teachers and social workers to curious community members. No prior art or theatre experience is required. We provide hands-on guidance, and participants often discover creativity they didn’t know they had.
3. What kinds of puppets do you make and use?
We use a wide range of puppets: hand puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets, object puppets, and large-scale creations. Many of our workshops focus on simple, accessible materials — cardboard, fabric, found objects — so that anyone can bring a character to life.
4. How can puppetry address serious topics like immigration or social justice?
Puppets can represent ideas, voices, and perspectives that might otherwise be difficult to express. They create a safe space for storytelling, allowing people to explore sensitive topics with creativity and compassion. For example, our Puppet Power conferences invite diverse communities to use puppetry to reflect on current social issues.
5. Is WP Puppet Theatre just for kids?
No! While we do bring puppetry to children and families, much of our work is aimed at adults — teachers, students, social workers, and helping professionals who want to use puppetry in applied settings. Our programs are professional development as much as they are playful.
6. How can I get involved with WP Puppet Theatre?
There are many ways! You can attend our Puppet Power conference, join a workshop, invite us to your school or organization, volunteer, or support us through donations and sponsorships. Every contribution helps us continue using puppetry to inspire, inform, and galvanize.
7. Who is WHY?
WHY is the puppet who answers.
Why! ignites curiosity in a campaign for children to interact with a puppet in an engaging way, explore the wonders of the world and gain knowledge and understanding.
