The VIEW from the Inside program has been delivered to a wide range of communities encompassing Aboriginal youth, High School art classes, Syrian refugees, Foster children, Chinese-speaking seniors, vulnerable homeless, Alzheimer clients, Girl Guides, under-employed young adults, young mothers, disadvantaged seniors, artists with disabilities and healing arts professionals.

Developed for Professionals

The VIEW FACILITATOR Training Course (VFTC) was developed to help professionals and teach them how to deliver the VIEW program. The ideal candidate for this course works in the fields of Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy, Drama Therapy, Play Therapy, Education, Nursing, Social Work, or Psychology.

No Art Experience Needed

You do not require extensive art experience to lead the course, only a willingness to explore your own creative abilities and support your clients in developing their expressive voice. Some technical expertise is required for online facilitation.

VIEW from the Inside: the training course:

During the e-learning experiential course, you will be required to:

  • Complete all lesson activities in sequence

  • Create your own self-portrait puppet and video a performative reflection

  • Share your final self-portrait puppet in a classroom forum

Upon completion of this course, you will have learned how to:

  • deliver the 8-session VIEW program

  • support the puppet-making process

  • encourage participants to share their story

  • celebrate the journey and showcase the work of your clients

  • encourage your administration to support the program

  • access all program materials

Certifications earned will include:

  • A certificate of completion and 5 CEU credits approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification will be awarded upon completion of ALL three parts.

  • Additionally,  WP Puppet Theatre is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The WP Puppet Theatre maintains responsibility for the program.

Course Outline

VIEW Program Development
We begin by introducing you to the VIEW Facilitator Training Manual and research study by the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research. Understanding the rigour taken to develop the program is important before jumping into the specifics of how to teach it.

VIEW Program Structure
Next, we dive into the program structure and introduce two other useful resources: the Organizational Schedule and Participant Handbook.

VIEW Program Sessions
Once you have a thorough understanding of the program development and program structure, we move into unpacking the 8-sessions. Here, we provide a ‘Behind the Scenes’ video of challenges you might encounter as a facilitator and how to overcome them, as well as hands-on activities, skill videos, examples of performative reflections, required readings and reflective journal questions.

Each one of the sessions below includes slides and a script to guide your facilitation. You will be required to complete a short quiz at the end of the course.

Planning Your VIEW Program
We conclude by discussing suggestions on bringing the program to your workplace and directing you to the case studies, showcasing the diverse populations we have worked with.

Upon completion of the course, you will receive a course certificate and Continuing Education Units (CEU). You will also have permission to use the teaching materials for educational purposes, including:
